“It’s not how old you are, it’s how you are old.”
Jules Renard
What is Senior/Geriatric Care?
Senior, or Geriatric, care is about supporting and maintaining joy, mobility and function in older animals. As they age, our animal companions’ needs change with respect to areas like mobility, cognition, nutrition, sight, and hearing. Being able to adapt to meet those needs means simply that comfort and love last longer!
When should I enrol my fur-baby?
There is no right or wrong time to enrol in Senior/Geriatric Care. Aging of cats and dogs depends on lifestyle, general health and breed, so there are no hard and fast rules as to what age your animal companion should be to enrol in our program. Basically, if getting older is impacting on his or her quality of life, for example with the onset of osteoarthritis, we can probably help.
So, what actually happens?
We’ll assess your fur-baby at home, as well as reviewing medical records and current medications; we’ll also assess pain, gait and mobility and teach you any physical therapy necessary to help, as well as supplying (at an additional cost) any necessary medication; we’ll assess weight, nutrition and feeding to make sure your animal companion’s diet is promoting optimal health AND enjoyment. We don’t perform routine health care like worming and vaccinations, and we don’t treat acute injury or illness, but we will work with your regular veterinarian in these cases to ensure our patient’s special senior needs are met.
Most of the families we care for are referred to us by their regular veterinarian, but some find us on their own. We welcome all pet-parents, and provide sensitive, empathetic care tailored to your family, your budget, and your needs, always focussed on the best interest of the patient.
